President of Algeria Abdelaziz
Bouteflika have officially resigned from the presidency after a 20-year-long
autocratic rule.
Bouteflika announced his resignation in a letter to the Constitutional Council. Hours earlier, the army had demanded “immediate application” of the constitutional procedure allowing for his removal.
Weeks of protest from Algerians and and the
Army’s interest (which is believed to be a subtle coup) saw the now former
president hand over power on Tv. Algerians believe this is not the end, but the
start of a new era for the country’s politics.
