China’s Ambassador to Israel, Du Wei has passed on.
Reports say Du Wei was found dead in his official residence on Sunday morning.
57-year old Ambassador Du assumed the role in Israel in February 2020, as the coronavirus pandemic was in full force across the globe; and had subjected himself to two weeks of self-quarantine on arrival.
Du had served in China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs for over 30 years, according to a document on the Chinese Embassy’s website. His first ambassadorship was to Ukraine, from 2016 to 2019.
Du’s death comes barely a week after US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, on his visit to Jerusalem, criticized China’s role during the coronavirus pandemic.
Pompeo had also called on Israeli leaders to stop signing major infrastructure and communications deals with Chinese companies.
In the meantime, the cause of his death is still unclear and not being treated as suspicious, following earlier reports from Israeli news organizations that there were no signs of violence.
